When you look at a website, you are looking at how the background coding of that particular page displays the layout, images, colour schemes and styling - just to mention a few aspects. When Google searches a web page, it searches just lines of code, alt tags, meta descriptions, content and everything you generally don't even see.
Remember the days when we used to all write things? Well websites still are written, but they use coding. HTML, PHP, Classic ASP, Javascript, CSS - you name it and this is what goes into making a website appear on your screen. But you know when you are looking at peoples writing, some of them you can read really well, and others look like a spider crawled across the page and probably died just for good measure.
Even though we have broadband, 4G - not long before I'm sure they 5G too - the fact is people don't like waiting to see a page come up on their screen. If they click on your website link, ideally they would like to see the page appear before the sun sets.
So what we try to do is make sure every website is loading as quickly as possible. Obviously you still want the page to look great, but this is one reason why we tend to avoid Content Management Systems like the plague - example one wordpress website we just tested took 9.8 seconds to download and open the page. By that time, your would be customer is ordering their takeaway.
