We make a living, you get a website and we keep our customers because we have not turned up at their door on Black Bess shouting "Stand and Deliver".

Our customers use our services because we are personal, simple and fair. We always chat with them first, get to know what they need, and usually can prepare an affordable estimate. Domain registrations and web hosting do need to be paid up front - but the web design projects are normally billed as a deposit, and then subsequent agreed payments as it continues to be developed.

Comparing like for like

There are a lot of different prices always being put on web designers pages - from the stupidly low to the "I need to sell a kidney to pay for this". There is a saying: If you are going to pay peanuts, then you can expect a monkey.

If you already have your own business, what so far have you done to make it work? It may be that you work damn hard and you have a website or advertising program that simply is not cutting the mustard. You don't need to invest thousands of pounds into your advertising or a website, but you do need someone that understands how websites work, and how to get the best from them. When you consider there are millions of websites, you need your website to show up somewhere - preferably near the top of the search engines.
Are you just thinking of starting up a business?
I've run my own business for 30 years plus now, and let me tell you, there are advantages and disadvantages to running your own business. Running your own business (or starting one) demands that you willing to work hard.
If you have a business, how dedicated are you to it?
If you're not prepared to put in long days every week, then really why should we? It's your business, but if you are thinking "build it and they will come" then you are sadly mistaken. You need to discipline yourself, and be prepared to work hard (well at least in the early years) of your business venture.
Do you want to succeed or would you prefer to do as little as possible?
If you wish to do as little as possible, then maybe consider the unemployment business where you can sit down and wait for a hand out. In your own business you need to be prepared to screw over your own mother to get somewhere (of course that is a joke), but you get the point!
